Soms lees je als ondernemer boeken die je inspireren. Daarom vind je op Voys.nl in het weblog periodiek een boekreview van een bijzonder boek. Dit keer viel er een magazine op de deurmat. Een goed moment voor een kijkje in het blad en de eventuele toekomst ervan.

Bright in je brievenbus

Met verbazing kijk ik in de brievenbus en daar vind ik een Bright. Verkeerd bezorgd, is het eerste wat ik denk. Toch staat op het adreslabel echt mijn naam. Uit het plastic voelt het blad prettig aan. De buitenzijde van het blad heeft geen glad glossy magazine gevoel, maar meer de ruwe touch van een paspoort.

Een papieren magazine: dat is lang geleden!

Het is lang geleden dat ik een magazine gelezen heb. Waar het vroeger een RSS lezer was op mijn laptop, vind ik mijn artikelen tegenwoordig via Zite, een iPad applicatie. De eerste 19 pagina's van de Bright vertellen mij echter niets nieuws. Er wordt een samenvatting gegeven van een artikel dat online ook al te lezen was of er wordt iets dieper ingegaan op een online reeds verschenen artikel. Vervolgens wordt er een kort overzicht van telescopen aangeboden dat mijn interesse wekt: wellicht ooit een leuk verjaardagskado voor mezelf of voor de kinderen. De uitgebreidere artikelen over Kim dot Com, het rockstargehalte van startups en Anonymous vertellen ook niets nieuws. Toch is dit niet vervelend, want de inhoud is leuk gebracht, de onderwerpen interesseren me en de papieren Bright ziet er prachtig uit.

Ik hecht veel waarde aan 5 mei. Een dag om te vieren dat wij in Nederland in alle vrijheid kunnen leven. De vrijheid wordt dan ook gevierd, met familie, vrienden, collega's en sinds enkele jaren ook met de kinderen.

Dit jaar heeft 5 mei voor het eerst een andere lading gekregen. Dit jaar werd er in Nederland voor het eerste toegang tot een grote website geblokkeerd door een rechter. The Piratebay was het slachtoffer en internetproviders worden verplicht om deze site voor hun klanten onbereikbaar te maken. Een internetfilter in het vrije Nederland, iets om eens over na te denken.

Waar gaat Eckart's Notes over?

Eckart Wintzen schrijft in zijn boek over de loopbaan van zijn bedrijf BSO, wat nu beter bekend is als Atos Origin. Dit bedrijf groeide uit tot een ICT dienstverlener met 10.000 werknemers. In het boek lees je niet alleen meer over de ondernemer en de weg die hij bewandelde, maar ook over het ‘celdelingsprincipe’.

Een eerste ontmoeting

Ik sprak op een bijeenkomst één van de mensen die betrokken was bij de lancering van de Nokia Lumia in Nederland. “Ik heb hem bij me” zei hij, en hij toverde een blauw doosje uit zijn zak. De plastic unibody ziet er prachtig uit en het scherm kleurt diep zwart. Na een swipe komen er blauwe blokken tevoorschijn. Ook dit ziet er geweldig uit. Dit lijkt in niets meer op Windows Mobile.

Een tweede blik

Twee weken later loop ik binnen bij Peperzaken. Als het goed is, hebben ze hem vandaag binnen. De Peperzaken versie is zwart. Ik speel er nog wat meer mee. “Als je hem ooit twee week kwijt wilt, zeg je het maar”, grap ik tegen @JoshuaPeper.

Why o why can all my wife’s iOS devices get iOS 5.1 within an hour after release, and why am I still waiting for Google to give met Android 4.03 on they own flagship device, the Galaxy Nexus, where the OS was released in 16 Dec 2011? Why don't I have Android 4.0.4 yet which was released in the US on the 6th of February 2012?

Early adopters, tss who cares

Now lets say that the Galaxy Nexus users are power users. They either want to be first or they are developing for the Android platform. Why o why would you leave this user group hanging?

Why wouldn’t you release a tablet OS to tablet builders

Google decided not to release the source code their first version of their tablet OS (Android 3). In doing so they alienated a lot of tablet builders like NotionInk and Acer with the Tab series. They also alienated the users who bought these devices.

Only 12 million tablets sold? there is only one to blame

By not releasing the Android 3 source code the number of tablets running a tablet Android OS stayed limited. Why would a developer make software if the device group is so small? You know how many tablets are sold in the Netherlands right now which have Android 4.0.x by default? Three (let me repeat that (THREE)). So of the 12 million Android tablets sold, how many are running a tablet OS? And Samsung and Google are complaining?

Android tablets for businesses without an ecosystem?

I work for a leading Dutch business telecom operator where open source is everywhere. We simply love it. I would have loved to introduce a great open tablet into the company but I didn't.

I didn’t because there where no apps. I was using my wife’s tablet (iPad2) more than my own tablet (Notion Ink Adam). Hardly any of the Android 2.2 apps where optimized for my Android 2.2 tablet. The Android 3.0 beta rom I put on my tablet myself did not give me much more apps.

No Zite, No Twitter app, build by Twitter, No Facebook app build by facebook, No Dropbox. Some Android phone apps did not look too bad, but why would I want to run those on a tablet? There was not even a decent simple note taking app or file browser optimized for Android tablets? What was I supposed to do Google?

The future of Android Tablets

Is there any hope for Android 4.0 and Android tablets? I surely hope so and here are some of the things I would consider.

1. All Android tablets should run 4.0

ZDNet wrote an article in February titled "Android tablets are doomed without a single OS version" and I totally agree with them. One tablet OS makes Android development so much easier. Google should be helping every Android tablet builder to get Android 4 running on their tablets. Goodwill and a homo genetic developer playground is what they 'll get in return. If they are smart, they should consider not only doing this for tablets but for phones too. It would be a developers heaven if all Android phones would act in a same way to the code they write. Goodwill and a shitload in high quality (tablet) apps for you my Google friend.

2. Make sure that Android 4.0 devices can upgrade

If everything is running Android 4 and you release Android 5, you want that update to be as simple for the phone builders / carriers as clicking a button. Facilitate this for your phone/tablet builders. Make it as simple as can be. And if a phonebuilder or carrier does not want to update a phone or tablet, let the world know so we know you are not the one to blame. Transparency and honesty in the telco world. How nice would that be.

3. Pay your developers

If you want to have an ecosystem, then pay Facebook, Twitter, CNN (Zite), Flipboard and the other top 50 (non commercial) apps used on iOS / the iPad to make the perfect Android phone/tablet client. Windows did this for windows phone, or they developed it themselves. I'm not using a lot of apps on my tablet, which goes for most of the user, but the basics should be there. Google, help yourself and get these apps in your eco system and make sure that the quality is unprecedented. I do think that if you solve point 1, your lack of apps problem might solve itself.

4. Embrace your community

XDA, Modaco, Tabletroms. If I had a such a hardcore group of coder fans surrounding my open source project my project would be run in a totally different matter. I don't think you guys at Google will ever be able to make the true step to full open development but if you want some tablet love I would consider it. What would true open development bring to the internet world. How big would that revolution be? Hardware builders like Samsung focusing on building the best revolutionary hardware and a group of coders building the perfect middle ware /OS platform for that. I get goosebumps thinking about it.

5. Change you mindset

To quote Andy Rubin, founder of Android: "I'm hoping people decide to put in the muscle and make their apps work great on tablets."

Are you kidding me. Read the above and read it again. If you alienate your tablet builders, your developers, your early adopters and all your tablet user hoping is the best you can do. "We are going to help all our partners and users and make make it easy for their apps to work great on tablets." should have been your quote.

Why should Google care about tablets

Developers say “it seems like they don’t care”

I spoke to on of the developers who works at one of the biggest Dutch app devhouses, and he said “It’s almost like Google does not care about Android on Tablets, since Android on phones had become such a major success”. This raises the question, why should Google care?

Google is an advertisement company

When Apple announced their new iPad Cook said “Apple sold 172 million post-PC devices last year” which comprised iPods, iPhones and iPads. (link to keynote).

Google is and advertisement company. Google’s total advertising revenues make op more than 24% of their total revenue in Q4 2011. Google is paying Apple to be the number one search engine on their iOS devices. They are also paying FireFox to be the number one search engine in that browser, that's one of the reasons their build their own Chrome browser. The motivations for buying and cultivating Android are the same. They need to have their own presence on PC and mobile devices to be more profitable. Their are likely to be the number one search engine on Android without having to pay (too much) for it.

One thing about the Apple and the FireFox deal. The amounts don't add up. Google is paying Mozilla $300 milion a year for a calculated add reveneu a year of $2 bilion. Why would they pay Apple almost $1 billion for $1.3 billion in gross revenue?

Tablet sales forecasts are staggering

The forecasts for tablet pc sales are staggering and for now the iPad and the ecosystem surrounding it are unchallenged. Gartner is optimistic about Android tablet sales, but with Google’s tablets history I dare to challange Gartners predictions. Gartner is less optimistic about Windows tablet sales, where I expect more in that area. Bing will be the number one searching on all windows devices, and Apple can decide whatever they like. The more dominant their position, the less money they will "give" to Google.

Even if the market share predictions from Gatner are right, Apple will be by far the biggest tablet player in 2015. Reason enough for Google to take the tablet market very seriously and make some radical changes.

TL;DR

Google make sure your latest Android version is on all popular phones and tablets. Say sorry to your users, techpartners and developers for not getting the latest Android there earlier. If you manage to get Android on tablets back on track you will have a long and prosper life on phones and tablets.

Qnap, the piratebay and support for magnet links

Not that I would ever share or download US TV shows via torrents but if I did (hypothetically speaking) I would run into a problem when using a Qnap in combination with the piratebay (From the Netherlands http://tpb.piratenpartij.nl or http://thepiratebay2.nl).

The piratebay, magnet links and Qget

The piratebay stopped their support for .torrent files and switched to magnet links. Qget, the program that sends the torrent file to the Qnap download station, does not support magnet links. Not that it has not been a wanted feature since November 2009 and has been +1en ever since ;).

QPGK and Transmission

So no magnet support for your Qnap you might say. Well the Qnap has it's own plugin framework where 3rd parties can create software for the Qnap. These things are called QPKG plugins and the only thing I would have wanted to install was the Twonky Media QPKG. The guys from the volunteer bit torrent client Transmission have been kind enough to offer a QPGK for the Qnap. They even build a remote interface (http://code.google.com/p/transmisson-remote-gui/) for Windows, Mac and Linux. How great are these guys.

Setting up your Qnap, Transmission and Firefox

After you set up Transmission and start the service on your Qnap the default username/pass is admin/admin. Change it! During the windows install of the remote GUI you can associate magnet files with the client. You can not do this on a Mac so you have to set it up manually (here is how set up Firefox to launch any torrent client when you click on a magnet link).

Congratulations. Now you can download Big Buck Bunny in HD via a bit torrent magnet link. If you like transmission you can donate for the main project and/or for the remote management GUI

Of course a switch to newsgroups is an option too. There is a QPKG for that.

P.s. On a mac the remote GUI does launch the client, but does not open the link. This is a known issue :(.

Nick Rinzema is bezig met een prachtige actie voor Fiji die wij graag ondersteunen. Hierbij een persoonlijk woord van Nick.

Nick Rinzema stelt zich voor

Mijn naam is Nick Rinzema (17 jaar) en ik zit in Havo 4 van het Augustinus College te Groningen. Al langere tijd ben begaan met het leven van kansarme kinderen in derde wereldlanden en met name ben geïnteresseerd in de sociale hulpprojecten voor bijvoorbeeld wees- en straatkinderen.

Onze koffiegeschiedenis

Het team van Voys neemt koffie drinken serieus. Smaak en temperatuur zijn daarbij de belangrijkste parameters. Dat begon bij, ik durf het haast niet te zeggen, een Senseo apparaat en dat ging heel, heel snel door naar filterkoffie. Een gedeelde bonenmachine was de volgende stap en uiteindelijk hadden we zelfs onze eigen bonenmachine: een witte Melitta Caffeo Solo.

Deze koop, waarbij het design technisch verantwoord was, bleek aanzienlijk minder robuust dan de Bosch TCA5601 voorganger. Kleinere reservoirs en een toenemend aantal koffiedrinkers zorgden ervoor dat deze witte schoonheid regelmatig mee mocht met de servicemonteur. Dit leverde iedere keer een vervanger en gratis reparatie op, waarvoor grote dank, maar nu de wholesale tak van Voys, VoIPGRID haar eigen nieuwe kantoor gaat bezetten, wordt het tijd voor een heroverweging.

Dag, mijn naam is Mark Vletter en ik kom graag één tot maximaal drie vrijdagen bij je organisatie werken. Ik weet dat het bijzonder klinkt en daarom leg ik graag uit waarom ik dit wil doen. Een kort schrijven is dit niet, dus ga er rustig voor zitten.

7 jaar Voys

Het is nu 7 geleden dat ik Voys Telecom heb opgericht en vanaf februari werken hier 18 mensen. 18 professionals die heel goed weten wie we met Voys willen zijn, waar we heen willen en hoe we dat het beste kunnen doen. Individueel en met elkaar. Voor deze mensen is "de baas op kantoor" niet meer noodzakelijk. Sterker nog: ik denk dat het hun persoonlijke groei beperkt. Als ik er niet ben nemen mijn collega’s zelf beslissingen, worden de materie nog meer machtig, worden daarmee daadkrachtiger. Dat maakt hen sterker en Voys tot een beter bedrijf.

Google heeft de broncode voor versie 4 van hun mobiele besturingssysteem vrijgegeven. Deze versie draagt de naam Ice Cream Sandwich wat afgekort wordt met ICS. Bij een nieuwe versie van het besturingssysteem komt een nieuwe flagship phone, welke door Samsung gemaakt is en de naam Galaxy Nexus draagt.

Scope van deze review

Het is lastig om een review te schrijven van alleen het nieuwe besturingssysteem. De hardware waar deze namelijk op draait is mede bepalend voor bijvoorbeeld zaken als performance en de levensduur van de batterij. Dit neemt niet weg dat ik voornamelijk zal kijken naar het nieuwe mobiele OS en de standaard applicaties die daar door Google bij worden geleverd. Ik focus me daarbij op de grootste plussen en de grootste verbeterpunten. Ben je niet zo'n lezer dan kun je de Video review gebruiken. Deze is korter en vooral een goede aanvulling op onderstaand artikel.

De PVV wil graag dat het "in de wacht staan" bij een bedrijf gratis wordt. De minister vind het idee "sympathiek" en die mening delen we bij Voys. "De Kamer verzoekt minister Maxime Verhagen (Economische Zaken) met telefoonnetbeheerders te gaan praten om dat in Nederland ook voor elkaar te krijgen." En daar ontstaat de crux.
